Sapphire™ Hollow Decking by Green Plank is a practical and intelligently engineered Wood Plastic Composite decking solution for customers who want lower weight, efficient use of materials, easy installation and the natural character of wood in one long-lasting outdoor product.
Unlike a fully solid profile, Sapphire™ uses a carefully designed hollow construction with oval internal chambers. This reduces unnecessary material and weight while maintaining an engineered profile structure for its intended application.
The result is a lighter Wood Plastic decking board that is easier to transport, handle and install than a comparable solid profile.
With approximately 55–60% beech hardwood fibre, European-sourced recycled HDPE (rHDPE), selected European or USA-sourced additives and traceable declared raw materials, Sapphire™ brings together material efficiency, practical performance and contemporary European Wood Plastic technology.
A decking profile does not always need to be solid to perform effectively. A well-engineered hollow profile can provide an excellent balance between weight, material efficiency, structural design, handling and cost effectiveness.
Sapphire™ has been developed around this principle. Its oval internal chambers remove unnecessary material from the centre of the profile while maintaining material where it is required by the engineered cross-section.
The internal geometry of a hollow Wood Plastic decking board is especially important in climates where rain, snow, freezing temperatures and repeated moisture exposure are common.
Sapphire™ therefore incorporates oval internal chambers as an integral part of the profile design. The chamber geometry provides internal space and has been developed with moisture and drainage conditions in mind. However, standing water should not be intentionally trapped inside a hollow decking profile.
Correct installation should allow rainwater and melting snow to drain away effectively rather than remain unnecessarily inside or around the decking system. This becomes particularly important during freezing conditions, because trapped water can expand when it freezes.
Good drainage is essential for the long-term performance of an outdoor terrace. Sapphire™ should therefore be installed with an appropriate fall in the direction of the intended drainage.
Where specified in the applicable Sapphire™ installation instructions, a slope of approximately 1 mm per linear metre should be maintained to encourage rainwater and melting snow to move away from the decking structure.
The current Green Plank installation instructions for the exact Sapphire™ profile, substructure and application should always take precedence.
Sapphire™ uses a carefully balanced Wood Plastic Composite formulation containing approximately 55–60% beech hardwood fibre, depending on the specific product formulation.
This wood fibre is combined with European-sourced recycled HDPE (rHDPE) and carefully selected functional additives sourced from established suppliers in Europe or the USA.
The objective is not simply to maximise one ingredient. Good Wood Plastic Composite performance comes from achieving the correct balance between wood fibre, polymer, additives, profile geometry and manufacturing technology.
One of the important material characteristics of Sapphire™ is its use of European-sourced recycled HDPE. Using appropriately selected recycled polymer allows valuable material to be brought back into productive use rather than relying entirely on virgin polymer for every application.
The quality and consistency of recycled HDPE are important because the polymer performs a critical role in a Wood Plastic Composite decking formulation. This approach combines recycled content with raw-material control and traceability.
Sapphire™ is based on a controlled supply chain with 100% traceability of the declared raw materials. This provides greater transparency regarding the origin of the beech hardwood fibre, European-sourced recycled HDPE and functional additives used in the Wood Plastic Composite formulation.
Wood Plastic does not have to look or feel like ordinary plastic. Sapphire™ contains a significant proportion of natural beech hardwood fibre, helping the decking maintain a closer visual relationship with traditional timber.
After installation and exposure to sunlight and weather, Sapphire™ can undergo a small and natural colour evolution. The slight colour development should not be confused with uncontrolled fading. Instead, a subtle change in tone can help the surface develop a more natural, timber-like appearance.
Sapphire™ is installed using compatible plastic or steel clips together with suitable screws. This concealed fixing method reduces visible screw heads across the main walking surface and creates a cleaner, more professional finished terrace.
Clips and screws are manufactured in Europe and selected to work with the Green Plank decking system.
Sapphire™ has been developed with a focus on recycled material use, efficient profile design, European sourcing where specified, long service life and responsible material utilisation.
European-sourced recycled HDPE, traceable raw materials and European-made installation components can contribute to a lower CO₂ footprint compared with relevant alternatives where supported by applicable environmental and product documentation.
Sapphire™ Wood Plastic Composite decking has been developed with demanding Nordic outdoor conditions in mind, including rain, moisture, snow, frost, freezing temperatures, summer sun and repeated seasonal temperature changes.
The combination of beech hardwood fibre, recycled HDPE, selected additives, engineered hollow geometry and correct installation makes Sapphire™ particularly relevant for Scandinavian and Northern European outdoor environments.
The Sapphire™ surface has been developed with particular attention to good slip resistance under normal outdoor conditions. This is especially important in Nordic regions, where rain and moisture can leave terraces wet for significant periods of the year.
If a project requires a particular slip-resistance classification or compliance with a specific testing standard, the applicable test documentation for the exact Sapphire™ profile should always be consulted.
Sapphire™ has been designed with an easy-to-clean, low-maintenance surface. Routine cleaning helps keep the decking attractive without the same recurring painting, staining or oiling routine associated with many traditional timber terraces.
Sapphire™ is available in 5 carefully selected standard colours. For qualifying architectural and larger project orders, Sapphire™ can also be produced in 4 additional project colours, providing up to 9 colour possibilities.
This gives architects and designers greater flexibility to coordinate the Wood Plastic decking with façades, windows, roofing, landscaping, outdoor furniture and the overall architectural theme.
Depending on the exact profile, loading conditions, application and installation requirements, selected Sapphire™ systems can be designed for support spacing of up to 400 mm c/c.
Correct support spacing is particularly important with hollow Wood Plastic Composite decking. The current Green Plank technical specification and installation instructions for the exact Sapphire™ profile must always be followed.
Sapphire™ has been developed as a long-life Wood Plastic Composite decking solution with emphasis on material control, efficient hollow-profile engineering, easy maintenance and practical outdoor performance.
Depending on the specific Sapphire™ product, application, correct installation and applicable warranty conditions, selected systems may be offered with a warranty of up to 15 years.

The latest Green Plank technical data sheet and installation instructions should always take priority over general product information.
Solid decking profiles have their place, but a heavier profile is not automatically the better solution for every terrace. A well-designed hollow profile can use materials more efficiently while providing the required performance for its intended application.
Sapphire™ uses oval internal chambers to reduce unnecessary mass while maintaining an engineered cross-section. The important question is therefore not simply whether a Wood Plastic decking board is hollow or solid. What matters is the complete engineering of the product: raw-material quality, profile geometry, wall thickness, approved support spacing, installation system, drainage and intended application.
More wood fibre is not automatically better in every Wood Plastic Composite formulation.
Sapphire™ uses approximately 55–60% beech hardwood fibre together with European-sourced recycled HDPE and selected additives to create a balanced formulation for its intended profile design and outdoor application.
Wood quality, polymer quality, additive package, extrusion control, profile geometry and correct installation all influence the final performance of Wood Plastic Composite decking.
Sapphire™ is designed for customers who want their outdoor space to retain a connection with natural wood. The beech hardwood fibre and timber-inspired surface help create a warmer appearance, while subtle natural colour evolution gives the boards additional character after outdoor exposure.
This balance defines Sapphire™: the character of wood combined with the efficiency and practicality of modern Wood Plastic technology.
Sapphire™ Hollow brings together European-sourced recycled HDPE, approximately 55–60% beech hardwood fibre, lower profile weight, engineered oval chambers, traceable raw materials, concealed installation and practical performance for Nordic outdoor environments.
