Composite Deck Installation Tips for Installers / Contractors
As a Deck Installer/builder you aim to design structures that will please your clients and suit their lifestyles. You have to have the right site, the right view and right products offering the outstanding efficiency, long life, and low maintenance. You need to heed Green Plank’s decking installation guides – even for out-of-sight framing – to keep from voiding the warranty.
When it comes to installing Green Plank® low-maintenance composite decking, a few tips and tricks will point you in the right direction to exceed your clients’ expectations. Green Plank® low-maintenance composite decking is different to install compared to soft or hardwood and many other composite decking. Unlike wood, Green Plank® low-maintenance composites are not affected by humidity. All composite decking expands and contracts due to ambient temperature variation. Timber and bamboo are not so moisture resistant and swell and shrink from moisture absorption and evaporation. Thermal “expansion and contraction” is very different from “swelling and shrinking” due to moisture content variation.
- Green Plank® low-maintenance composite decking boards should not be used for columns, beams, joists, support, etc.
- Thermal movement is noticeable in a variation of the length of the composite decking board.
- Install the decking boards with a parallel gap of at least 3mm between each one to allow water to drain right through them. Leave an adequate 5-7mm head-to-head space between boards for thermal expansion coefficient and the local potential maximum temperature.
- Green Plank® low-maintenance composite deck boards require that the joists be maximum 40cm c/c apart for residential decks. For commercial decks distance between joists would be 25cm or less on center. For more information, please Contact Us
